What is the Ontario MICROFIT / FIT program?
The microFIT Program is a stream of the Ontario Power Authority’s(OPA) Feed-in Tariff(FIT) Program for the renewable energy in Ontario. It is intended to encourage the development of “micro-scale” renewable energy projects across the province. Owners of these projects will be paid a fixed price for the electricity they produce.
If you are a homeowner, farmer or small business owner, or if you manage an institution such as a school or place of worship, you have the opportunity to develop a small renewable electricity generation project on your property. You’ll be paid for all the electricity you produce through the microFIT Program.
What are the advantages to joining the Ontario MICROFIT / FIT program?
You can protect our environment, use green energy, have cleaner air and better health for your family.
Stable monthly income, receive a cheque in the mail each month for 20 years, return rate from 12-17% per year.
How long is the payback period?
To have it installed by you, it takes as little as 4 to 5 years compared with the system installed by an installer which takes 7 to 9 years.
How much are you getting each month?
For a 10kW system, with rate at 80.2 cents/kwh, you are getting about $10,000 to $12,000 each year for 20 years.
How to start?
- Visit the OPA website for details about this program, http://microfit.powerauthority.on.ca/
- Estimate the roof size (South, South-East, South-West) and system size (each kW solar panel need 80 to 100 square feet of roof space)
- Contact your local distribution (hydro) company to get an offer to connect.
- After you have the offer, apply the microFIT program online at the OPA website.
- Usually after 90 days, you should receive a conditional offer from OPA for the project.
- Purchase the solar equipment package
- Obtain a building permit for the installation.
- Install it yourself or hire an installer and electrician to make the electrical connection.
- Once installed, a safety inspection with the Electrical Safety Authority will ensure the system is operational and safe.
